A Life in Poetry,
Pictures & Prose
"On June 1, 1947,
I was born, dead.
But, by some
miracle instead
I didn't go
straight to Heaven;
I avoided death
By God's good Graces,
His message, I believe -
"Before we meet,
you're going places".
Many issues confronted me through infancy, childhood and my teenage years. So I grew up with disabilities.
Nevertheless, I completed primary school at Eastwood, the Leaving Certificate at The Kings School; graduated from UNSW BA (majors in Psychology and History of Philosophy and Science).
In 1969 I began a 15 year career in HR; concurrent with one as a fledgeling artist and writer.
During the 80s and 90s, I had many successful solo art shows, for numerous charitable causes.
My matrimonial endeavours back then were less successful.
I was, however, blessed…
3 daughters, 1 son.
Now, I'm happily soulmated with Anniie the Illustrator.
In 1998, I helped initiate Kings Cross Rotary's 'PickMeUp' program - transporting wheelchair reliant locals.
With Lady Cutler in 2002, we founded Sir Roden Cutler Charities. Rolling wheelchairs around New South Wales and across Australia, we supported 150 local charitable causes. We produced a book and documentaries.
In 3 years, from 2006 to 2009, myself and a large team of volunteers rolled wheelchairs around New South Wales, providing donations to nearly 150 bush charities, which desperately needed help during time of severe drought and bushfires.
The devastation caused, not only to humans and communities, but also to animals and their habitat, impacted us all. The future was indeed dire for koalas, kangaroos kookaburras and other birds and animals. I decided to write about it.
I penned a lyric poem - “The Adventures of Karey and Kareful”
I founded ‘Campaigns for Charitable Causes’ in 2011, curating art shows and producing more documentaries focussing on charitable causes all around the world, from local hospitals to wheelchair tourism.
Karey Kangaroo and Kareful Koala came to life in 2011.
I had them in starring roles in ‘Rolling out the Red Carpet’ a documentary I made for Tourism NSW, designed to highlight mobility issues and tourism opportunities for 'wheelies' and others with disabilities.
In early 2020, Anniie the Illustrator visited Sydney from the USA. Looming Covid lockdowns forced her to flee Sydney her beloved Hometown.
Back in the USA, I sent her stills from the ‘Red Carpet’ doco.
In return, she sent me her drawing of Karey and Kareful.
We knew we had something wonderful
By 2022, I'd written myriad poems and short stories, 12 fiction and nonfiction books… And we had created the first 5
KareyandKareful Storybooks!
They proved most beneficial to Special Needs Teachers helping their Students improve their interest in reading and consequently their reading skills.
Now in 2024, we've founded KareyandKareful Foundation, a registered Charity, able to receive tax deductible donations;
with us as Founder Members and with an independent Board of very supportive, committed and passionate Directors…
"So now we pursue
our Holy Grail…
5 free
KareyandKareful Storybooks
For every Aussie
Special Needs
Student.
This quest indeed
One most prudent;
With your support
We will prevail.
In this quest
We will not fail".
